Summertime Events PDF Print E-mail

Summer in Des Moines kicks off with many events that keep our prevention team busy. This year, we had a great booth at LGBT Pride Fest, we engaged the African American community at Juneteenth, and we worked with historic African American churches on National Testing day.

- We had hundreds of booth visits at Pride, spoke on-stage to thousands of people about rising HIV infections, and distributed over 3,500 condoms.
- At Juneteenth, we reached over 100 people at our booth, distributing over 800 condoms. Local band Guerilla Hustle was featured at our booth, helping to raise our profile.
- On National Testing day, we visited Des Moines Fellowship and New Friendship Church of God, speaking to over 140 people about HIV testing.

Thanks to all who helped out, and thanks to everyone who stopped by our booths!

We > AIDS Celebration PDF Print E-mail

Hi! I’m Tasmania “Taz” Clayburn, Minority HIV Program Specialist here at The Project.  I have been working hard to strengthen connections within the African American community, as well as bringing awareness to the community about HIV/AIDS, what The Project is, and what services are being offered to the African Americans.

41584_131414236886745_9151_nOn Saturday, July 31st, 2010, with the assistance and support of other community agencies, businesses and a myriad of local musicians/performers, The Project will present “Get in the Know”, a day-long HIV/AIDS awareness-raising event! In addition to our own prevention message, we will be implementing, for the first time in Iowa, the national “Greater Than” campaign in the hopes of raising even more awareness about HIV/AIDS within the African American community. As Minority HIV Program Specialist, I am proud to have received permission from The Kaiser Family Foundation to use the “Greater Than” campaign in The Project’s ongoing local prevention efforts and am honored to have our upcoming community event included as one of the “Greater Than” national events. Please take a moment to visit www.greaterthan.org and don’t forget to mark your calendars and join me at what I hope will be an amazing community event!
