Help wanted: Lenoir Community College


The Art Instructor is responsible for providing quality art instruction to students associated with Fine Arts Visual Arts and other LCC students who require Gen Ed art instruction through the use of seated, online and in the lab. The instructor is responsible for providing individual and whole group instruction so that students are able to successfully complete degree requirements in an engaging environment. The instructor is responsible for planning, creating, and coordinating all courses through the Chair of the Fine Arts program so that students can successfully complete degree requirements; coordinate all facets of the AFA-Visual Arts program; and promote the visual arts in the local and surrounding community through visible, dynamic and engaging means.

Duties of the Art Instructor include, but are not limited to:

Improve community partnerships in the arts by working with local arts community leaders

Organize and host art exhibitions to showcase the art of students, faculty/staff and visiting artists on an annual basis

Implement, organize and work with the LCC Foundation to coordinate at least 2 AFA visual art events in the community to promote the visibility of the arts and increase funding for future art students

Partner with the AFA-Music program to assist in the construction, design and painting/construction of sets for all future theatrical events

Collaborate with four-year college and university partners to create pathways for students to seamlessly transfer at least 60 of their AFA credits to a bachelor’s degree

Provide necessary complements to art courses to ensure courses can be offered that align with students’ degree pathways

· Ensure a vibrant presence of the LCC’s visual arts program in Lenoir, Jones, Greene and surrounding counties via social media, events and other platforms

Enhance LCC’s visual arts curriculum to include ceramics, photography, glassblowing and other courses as needed

· Highlight art, sculptures, ceramics, etc. students/faculties on campus and at community art exhibits

Other tasks

Ensure the art lab and program spaces are clean, organized and presentable as a visible art space

· Direct students in laboratory classes; train and supervise the activities of students in the laboratory; assist students with lab work and related activities

Ensure that equipment, materials and other resources such as teaching aids are available for lessons

· Play a leading role in the maintenance of laboratory equipment; and if necessary, carry out simple maintenance

· Arrange for equipment repairs when machines, tables, etc. break down

Plan, implement and evaluate course-specific instruction

Facilitate teaching in the teaching discipline with the faculty

Coordinate course planning, implementation and evaluation

Develop, implement and evaluate curriculum

Coordinate and oversee curriculum development by designing, planning, organizing and evaluating assigned curriculum

Supervise and participate in the evaluation of faculty in the area of ​​the program

Develop, implement and evaluate department specific policies with division leadership

Serve as a resource for student resolutions

Faculty members must demonstrate and maintain competence in each of the following areas throughout their employment with the College:

Mastery of the subject

· Demonstrate in-depth and accurate knowledge of the teaching discipline

· Display the ability to interpret and evaluate theories of the field or discipline

· Connect the subject with related fields

· Stay current on the subject through professional development; involvement in professional organizations; and attend professional meetings, conferences and/or workshops

· Learn and use technology to enhance teaching and the educational experience as appropriate

Educational performance

Teach a course load appropriate to the teaching discipline

Plan and organize instruction to maximize student learning

· Use appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate the topic to students

Modify, where appropriate, teaching methods and strategies to meet the diverse needs of students

Utilize available instructional technology, i.e. internet, interactive technology, etc., as appropriate

Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate assignments for students

Contribute to the selection and development of teaching materials in accordance with course objectives

Assessment of student learning

Establish and track meaningful learning goals

Develop and explain methods that fairly measure student progress toward course objectives

Assess student performance fairly and consistently and turn in student work promptly to promote maximum learning

Maintain accurate records of student progress and submit final grades each semester according to established deadlines

Demonstrate sensitivity to student needs and circumstances

Support of College Policies and Procedures

Teach assigned courses in a multi-campus environment

Teach credit or non-credit courses in the teaching discipline as needed

Post and maintain regular office hours to ensure accessibility to colleagues and students for notice and consultation

· Act as the faculty’s academic advisor for students

Prepare, distribute and submit approved lesson plans and lesson plans for all assigned sections in accordance with program and division policies

Maintain confidentiality of student information

Replace the other instructors of the teaching discipline in case of absence

Exercise stewardship of college facilities, materials and resources

Comply with responsibilities cited in the Lenoir Community College Catalog, Faculty Handbook, Distance Learning Handbook, Policy Handbook, and Procedures Handbook

Participation in college, division, department, and program activities

· Sit on College committees as assigned

· Participate in meetings and events as required

· Respond promptly to requests for information

· Support part-time and full-time colleagues

Contribute to curriculum development processes of programs, departments and divisions

· Participate in graduation ceremonies

Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in communicating with students, colleagues, staff and administrators as an individual or as part of a team

Contribution to the growth and improvement of the College’s mission and programs

Become familiar with the College’s goals, mission and long-range plans

Contribute to planning and development processes through appropriate mechanisms and channels

Participate in professional activities that contribute to the educational goals of the College and its constituents

· Perform professional responsibilities in accordance with the objectives, mission and relevant plans of the College

Participate in the marketing, recruitment and retention of students, faculty and staff

Other assigned duties and responsibilities


Master’s degree from a regionally accredited art institution or master’s degree and 18 graduate semester hours in art (courses designated as graduate-level art courses)

Previous teaching experience at a community college or university, experience using instructional technology, and teaching online courses is preferred
