The campaign was launched by the state government in June to address learning gaps created by the prolonged closure of schools during the pandemic. By the second term, more than 1.21 lakh of Grades 1-3 teachers in public and aided schools had undergone training.

The State Council for Education and Research Training (SCERT) has prepared new materials for the second term, which include student workbooks and a teacher’s manual.

“During the three-day training, we focused on core mission objectives as well as new material for the second term. The teachers were able to engage in micro-teaching and do small demonstrations as well as clarify their doubts about the upcoming term,” a school education department official said.

For the first term, since students were back in school after a long hiatus, the focus was on creating a learning environment that would increase levels of engagement, prepare them to return to class and would focus on student needs, the official said. .

Through the training program, which ran from October 10 to 12 across the state, teachers learned songs, dances, stories and puppets they could use in the classroom. Videos of these were shared by the school education department on social media.

As part of the Ennum Ezhuthum mission, the classrooms of classes 1 to 3 have been renovated. In many schools, teachers have decorated classrooms with blackboards, colorful posters with educational content, reading corners and various learning aids.

“As part of the training, we are encouraged to use storytelling, songs, dance, puppetry and arts and crafts to engage students and make learning interesting. There has been a marked increase in their interest and motivation in the classroom,” said S. Premalatha, a primary school teacher.
